Dam Removals
NSS is proud to have removed and restored 6 impoundments over the past 7 years.
"Freeing" these systems has innumerable benefits to a river. Among these benefits are restoring sediment transport, restoring migratory fish passage, as well as reconnecting the river to its floodplain. See Our Work Here |

Bank Stabilizations
Poor land use practices such as unrestricted cattle grazing, development, and riparian cutting has left many of our stream banks in peril. These "cutbanks" are extremely vulnerable to erosion with every rain event.
These projects protect the existing land, prevent further input of sediment and nutrients, and provide critical complex habitat for the biological community. See Our Work Here |

Wetland Construction
Functioning wetlands filter water, capture flood waters, recharge groundwater, and provide critical habitat for many fish, herps, fowl, and mammals.
Restoring the natural hydrology to historic wetlands often involves the breaching of levees and replumbing of streams that were once diverted for agriculture. A natural flood and drying cycle promotes a diverse array of native plant growth and provides imperiled habitat to animals that rely upon overland flooding and seasonal variations in water levels. |
